Online Writing Resources | Support for College of DuPage Students | Resources for Online Students
The College of DuPage Library: Search library catalogs, indexes, and databases; request library materials, and browse new acquisitions. See especially the page on Research Help, which includes information of planning research, evaluating web sites, and citing sources. See also the library's "Virtual Stacks" reference page.
Columbia Guide to Online Style: The definitive guide to online citation and documentation, originally developed by Janice Walker.
The Composition Links: College of DuPage's own professor Daniel Kies created and maintains this exhaustive, annotated list of online resources for writing students.
LEO: Literacy Education Online: Sharon Cogdill and Judith Kilborn of Saint Cloud State University in Minnesota co-developed this site, which includes information on writing, researching, and documenting academic essays. Also be sure to visit their units on evaluating web resources.
A Guide for Writing Research Papers based on Modern Language Association (MLA) Documentation: Prepared by the Humanities Department and the Arthur C. Banks, Jr., Library; Capital Community-Technical College; Hartford, Connecticut (Includes a link to a similar guide on writing research papers in APA style.)
Hypertext Webster Gateway: "This hypertext Webster interface provides a point-and-click client interface. . . for accessing various dictionary services on the Internet." This site will lead you to a variety of online dictionaries and thesauruses.
The Literature, Arts, and Medicine Database: This excellent overall humanities source, searchable by keyword, gathers poetry, novels, stories, paintings, films, and works of nonfiction around themes such as "aging," "freedom," "survival," and "urban violence." Many of the selections are annotated, and some include full online versions of the texts, sometimes read by the authors. A must see for teachers who use thematic units.
Purdue Online Writing Lab: Purdue's OWL is one of the best on the web. It includes writing and research guidelines, a wide variety of instructional handouts, and links to other OWLs. Plus, handouts on handling documentation in both APA and MLA formats.
Urban Legends Reference Pages: The best site on the web for tracking virus hoaxes and other internet lore, as well as for general information about and collections of urban legends and myths of every stripe. This is a multimedia intensive site, so be patient if you have a slow connection.
WWW Virtual Library: "The VL is the oldest catalog of the web, started by Tim Berners-Lee, the creator of the web itself. Unlike commercial catalogs, it is run by a loose confederation of volunteers, who compile pages of key links for particular areas in which they are expert; even though it isn't the biggest index of the web, the VL pages are widely recognised as being amongst the highest-quality guides to particular sections of the web" (From About the WWW Virtual Library).
